KPWT SUPERKITE BRAZIL – DAY 2
Today invited 30 of the world’s top international riders to a sublime spot for freestyle. Lagoa de Cauipe is a renowned spot for excellent conditions with strong wind, flat shallow water and provided the perfect setting for the KPWT Superkite freestyle single elimination.
Local media teams, hoards of local spectators and travelling kiteboarders all crowded the lagoon to enjoy the exhilarating freestyle competition that was on show today.
Conditions were great today, with a wind averaging 20 knots, hardly any chop on the water and the race director began the first heats at 09h20.
Petr Tyushkevich: “I am really happy to be here. I arrived 2 weeks ago to begin my training and to get used to the conditions. The draw looks to be tough, with some good Brazilian riders here, so I will do my best and work as hard as I can.”
Leander Vyvey (BEL, JN) was eliminated in the early rounds to the local rider Evandro Da Silva (BRA, RRD) who is a strong competitor. He keeps his kite low on the power moves and holds the kite super high to push himself when looping.
A surprise in the women’s competition was the early elimination of Gisela Pulido (SPA, AIRUSH) to Karolina Winkowska (POL, NAISH). Karolina showed good variety in her moves performing a 313, blind judge and some big kiteloops. At the end of the heat she pushed herself towards a massive KGB, but crashed to the disappointment of the screaming spectators who were treated to a super heat.
Michael Shitzhofer (AUS, JN) and Petr Tyushkevich (RUS, FLEXIFOIL) were welcomed to Brazil and did not disappoint! The locals immediately responded to these two world-class competitors of the KPWT and they showed them why they are both ranked as 2 of the top performers this year.
Jesse Richman (HAW, CABRINHA) looked to be in strong form today and progressed through the rounds defeating the likes of Ariel Corniel (DOM REP, OZONE) and the local Thomas Teixeira (BRA, RRD). He met Evandro Da Silva in a spectacular final to end this fantastic day on the lagoon in Cauipe. The Brazilian was the man of the hour, much to the delight of the local fans, who were screaming for their rider up until the final horn.
Susi Mai (GER, CABRINHA) met Karolina in the ladies single elimination final and showed some good variety, leaning towards old school tricks, but accumulated enough score to edge the powerful Polish rider.
Thank you to T’AI, the local organizers today for all their help in moving the equipment across, ensuring all were hydrated and the event ran smoothly.
