Well, it is not all true. He is more of a jerk than a bad ass. There was no knife at all involved - he was using some kind of powder to get rid of the sharks. He was cheating in the interviews. But that is not all.

He did not informed any coast guards about the fact, that he wants to travel such ridiculous distance. Fact is, that he was trying to cross boarders, so by law he had to talk with both sides which is Egypt and Saudis Arabia consulat.

After he realized that he lost control and he can not continue his trip on his own, he decided to use his GPS tracking device which had many buttons, one of which was "CALL FOR HELP" and another one "STOP CALLING FOR HELP". He was clicking all buttons that he could see, not because he was shocked - he did not even read the manual. Because he was mashing those buttons like fucking crazy, coast guards were getting some fucked up data and tracking him, instead of taking 30 minutes, took around 40 hours. All he had to do, was to set up the device before the take off and learn which button he had to push. He was too BADASS to do it I suppose. Also, the device was borrowed from some agency, and this kitesurfer did not change the ICE (in case of emergency) numbers, so in the middle of the night, owner of the device started getting thousands of calls from the device. He contacted the coast guards and after whole weekend on the phone with guards in Saudi Arabia they managed to find the guy.

What is even more fucked up, is that now he is suing the guy who borrowed him the device. The same guy who spent whole weekend on rescuing him. He claims that the device was broken.
